30 Minutes or Less: Or Less.

30 Minutes or Less – 2011
Directed by
Ruben Fleischer
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Dilshad Vadsaria, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Nick Swardson, Michael Pena, Fred Ward
Written by Michael Diliberti

30 Minutes or Less is a nihilistic, sadistic, pessimistic and hedonistic mess trying to pass itself off as a caper movie.  Parts of it work, but other parts make you feel like trash just for watching it.  It meanders to the point of pathos.  There is so little joy in any of the events one wishes that everyone would just lay down and succumb to the darkness behind their idiotic machinations.  This is supposed to be a comedy, but there was more laughs in 5 minutes of Fleischer’s Zombieland than all 83 minutes of this tripe.

Instead of wasting another 30 minutes on this, lets break it down to what worked and what didn’t.

What worked:
Eisenberg – The guy is better than this movie.  Who in the hell is going to believe someone with a vocabulary like his delivering Pizzas?  He sells it, for what it’s worth.
Ansari – Dude deserves better than this movie.   Totally believable as a teacher who doubles as a loser.
Vadsaria – Beautiful, at ease in front of the camera, and will be in much better than this movie.
The bank robbery – Seamless, funny and different from anything I have seen since Stir Crazy.

What didn’t:
Danny McBride – Sure he plays well the sex-obsessed, moronic reject with venom for all who point that out.  Does he have to do this in every movie?
Nick Swardson – The comedy thing, both stand up and movies…it just isn’t working.
The script – At the worst times (like whenever McBride spoke) it seemed like there wasn’t one.
Fred Ward – I like him best as the character no one expects to know more than every one else.
Michael Pena – Never has such a nice guy been so miscast.  A sadist killer?  Really?  First I need him to save my kid from a house fire.
Everything else – This film belongs in the rear view mirror.
