Ben Affleck Returns in The Accountant 2

The Accountant 22025

Director Gavin O’Connor
Screenplay Bill Dubuque
Starring Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson,Daniella Pineda, J. K. Simmons, Alison Wright

The Accountant ranks high on the list of movies that welcome a sequel. It continues one of Ben Affleck’s most effective characters, Christian Wolff. He works as a fixer of sorts for all sorts. He spends his considerable free time with actual accounting work.

The second story occurs almost a decade after the first successful film. Simmons’ Ray King is semi-retired, but he still works on compelling cases. One such case has him meeting with Pineda’s Anaïs. He shows her a picture of a family from years ago, Anaïs says she doesn’t kill kids. King tells her he wants to find the kid in the picture. Anaïs informs King that there is a swell of hitmen surrounding them and they are not after her.

Soon King meets his doom. A message he left on his person pulls in Medina (Addai-Robertson). She then brings in The Accountant. Eventually, Christian determines he needs his brother, Braxton (Bernthal) who has more than one connection to Anaïs himself.

The Accountant 2 effectively mixes some serious topics without being preachy. We get to know all of the characters carried over from the first film develop in subtle ways. The combination of Braxton and Christian is particularly effective. O’Connor and Dubuque present a story that is breathable through the action. They lean a bit too much on a bunch of seemingly all-knowing kids working with Justine (Wright) back at the institute.

The biggest crime is that we’ve had but one sequel to now in this series. The feeling of this film is so confident, it may be an even bigger hit than the first. That should get the team rolling.
