In Time – 2011
Written & Directed by Andrew Niccol
Starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Vincent Kartheiser, Alex Pettyfer
So, if you’ve seen Gattica, you’ve pretty much seen In Time. Y0u have a lowly guy, who is a factory worker, eking out an existence while a privileged class lives on the other side. Then he gets access from someone who is part of the upper crust and wants out. This, of course, is not acceptable to someone, so the keystone cops are called in. Along the way an innocent waif stumbles into the fold and then chaos threatens to erupt.
This time, for the working class guy, Will Salas, played by the usually smooth Timberlake and the waif, Sylvia Weis, is Seyfried wearing stupid hair. Their chemistry is okay, augmented by the circumstances and some wonderful cinematography by legend Roger Deakins. There is some clever play with the concepts of time and Darwinism. Murphy gives good, serious chase as a “Timekeeper” who has lived on a per diem for 5 decades. There is a neat subplot with a group called The Minutemen who chase after people to steal time. The resolution of the thread is sublimely cool.
If it seems like I am being brief, it is intentional. You have really one decision to make if you have seen Gattica already. Do you like Timberlake, Seyfried and Murphy? Since I do, I watched the movie with no regrets. I wouldn’t watch it twice, though. Not enough time in the world to see this story a third time.
