Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (****) means family
a worthy, if occasionally slight tale that serves as a solid springboard for a Marvel franchise that right now is happy to have one.
Netflix’ Gunpowder Milkshake (***) is on the Wick spectrum
…this is mostly an excuse to show some very capable killer ladies strut their stuff on screen for in just under two hours. This is more than enough for me.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout (***1/2) completes a cycle
“This is an excellently crafted film. It hits every mark that needs to be hit, often times too squarely for effect. The story worked with Rogue Nation for a two film arc, but it would be a good idea to go back to the original premise of different directors for different films now that we’ve seen what McQuarrie can do…twice.”
Black Panther (*****) – All the Stars
The onslaught of press behind this film is warranted, but not only for the intersectional reasons the media wants to throw in your face. This is an ageless story about a world we all would love to visit. Who it represents is important, but it shouldn’t be a victory limited to race. To leave it there would belie how important it is to humanity that we tell good, relatable stories. This is a great film.
