Us (****) – Tethered to fear

“The film is not a classic, though it is incredibly good. The predictability of the film outweighs the quirky, threadbare premise that we’re supposed to take on faith. I just can’t believe there are that many subways that have been abandoned, yet so clean, for so long. Even though this film makes me want to believe.”

Black Panther (*****) – All the Stars

The onslaught of press behind this film is warranted, but not only for the intersectional reasons the media wants to throw in your face. This is an ageless story about a world we all would love to visit. Who it represents is important, but it shouldn’t be a victory limited to race. To leave it there would belie how important it is to humanity that we tell good, relatable stories. This is a great film.

Disney slightly improves The Jungle Book (***1/2)

To be sure, I am probably never going to own this film. I may watch it again, but I know there will be more sequels, more remakes and more attempts to improve on the profits of this property. I appreciate it for what it is, and I did like the way the characters look like their voice counterparts, much the same way they did in the original. The wheel comes back around and its spin adds not that much to the life of the story.
