Captive State (**) is a long shot
“Wyatt and co-writer spend so much time setting up the labyrinthian plot, we are allowed little time to invest in learning much about any particular character. The end result plays more sterile than it probably should. The surprise we’re expecting is more of an obligation than a relief. ”

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse is a world without end
“Every once in a while, something comes along that opens your eyes to a new way of viewing cinema. Star Wars did this for me first back when I was 6 years old. Goodfellas did it in 1991. Now we have this…a comic book cartoon movie.”

Bumblebee (***1/2) is straightforward storytelling
“This film is 2nd best of the series, after the first one. It’s really not close after these two films, even if I enjoy Revenge of the Fallen quite a lot.”

Aquaman (***1/2) has fun in the shallows
“As it stands, the film still should do quite well. It’s more fun than any DCEU film than Wonder Woman yet it still feels like something that matters at times. Not all that much, though. I hope WW, The Flash and Aquaman push their leads and the DCEU out of the mire. ”

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (***1/2) Everything is Amazing but the Leads
It’s the rare film that can keep the attention of both me and my wife. Neither of us moved during the whole running time.

Creed II: (****1/2) gives us time to breathe
After an engaging round one that saw Jordan move into the role of fighter and Stallone gracefully filling the role of trainer, Creed II gives us a development not only worthy of the series, but in better than most of the other films.
