Chappaquiddick (*****) – cold hard reality of a strong and murky current
#chappaquiddick “Curran and writers Allen and Logan have crafted a strong and clear portrayal of one of the dark moments of the lives of many people. Ultimately we see the true form of a man who saw himself as a victim of expectation as he thought nothing of those he victimized.”

The Miracle Season (****) Live Like Line
#livelikeline “Sure, the acting is a little goofy. It stops on the border of maudlin. It’s as accurate a recreation as I’ve seen. Most important, never loses touch with the true feeling a small city can feel about something seemingly as inane as a sports game. It’s more than that, though. It’s about a kid…

The Florida Project (*****) is the scariest movie ever
Moonie, her life is a fragile bubble that could pop at any time. Or she could learn to live like this, relying on the good will, mercy or silence of others to subsist in a life that is dishonest to us but just plain life to her.

Black Panther (*****) – All the Stars
The onslaught of press behind this film is warranted, but not only for the intersectional reasons the media wants to throw in your face. This is an ageless story about a world we all would love to visit. Who it represents is important, but it shouldn’t be a victory limited to race. To leave it…

Darkest Hour (****) is the other side of Dunkirk
Wright has made a film that plays a good contrast to Christopher Nolan’s superior Dunkirk. We see the threat that looms at home before it strikes abroad. So much is at stake, the tension is unbearable, yet Churchill finds a way. Good Lord does he ever.

Adams and Jefferson on The Phantom Thread
Two old friends dissect the last Daniel Day-Lewis film (for now) and discuss that while it was likable, they’d rather re-watch the old stuff.

I, Tonya (*****) – Fall, fall again
I, Tonya – 2017 Director Craig Gillespie Screenplay by Steven Rogers Starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Julianne Nicholson, Bobby Cannavale, Caitlin Carver, Paul Walter Hauser For all of the stupidity, abuse and backwards ways of thinking, I never could get past the idea that Tonya Harding couldn’t be that bad. The fact that the chosen hero of “the incident” Nancy Kerrigan…
