Midway (***1/2) – The sea remembers its own
If for no other reason we learn the name of Richard “Dick” Best, Midway is worth the watch.

Motherless Brooklyn (***) is simple and reverent
“Overall it’s a good, not great effort. The film is enjoyable if predictable. Norton’s ability to show a clean, multi-layered view of the politics that went into creating the city he loves so dearly is entertaining.”

Forgotten Gems: Elvis & Nixon (****) – The claws of a tiger
“This film is a must for fans of Michael Shannon. It’s yet another example of his powerfully subtle presentation skills. If one can get past the fact that it stars Spacey, this is film will delight, inform and entertain the viewer.”

Stan & Ollie (****1/2) fills the soul of memory
“There is very little to criticize in this film. It’s purpose is to give us a close up view of the duo at a crucial time so that we could get an understanding of what it is that made their relationship seem so magical. The film is a joy, ultimately, even if we know its…

From Braveheart to the Outlaw King
Outlaw King will not be considered an equal bookend to Braveheart’s first part of the story of the Scottish Rebellion, but it should not be considered a failure by Mackenzie. The history presented is debatable, but it’s close enough to warrant some nice scenes and a series of muddy battles.

First Man in IMAX (****1/2) Soul Deep in Space
#FirstMan “This film is necessary for one to understand the reach of humans. From out of the dark of a life lost so young, hope springs so forcefully. It’s more than a flag that we put on that moon. It’s all of our hopes and dreams.”

Just make sure the screen is large enough to encompass what’s great about it, and make sure your stereo dulls the piercingly high register. This…

Borg vs. McEnroe (****) inverse symmetry
McEnroe is the visual representation of Borg’s internal struggles. As wild as he is, he looks to become the ironic end to Borg’s controlled, furious engine. Metz takes his time to present this convergence in a slow boil.

Chappaquiddick (*****) – cold hard reality of a strong and murky current
#chappaquiddick “Curran and writers Allen and Logan have crafted a strong and clear portrayal of one of the dark moments of the lives of many people. Ultimately we see the true form of a man who saw himself as a victim of expectation as he thought nothing of those he victimized.”
